Dust Vs. Suspected Mold

Dust is usually consistent. You’ll find a uniform, grey-colored coating on the surfaces inside your ducts and air vents. Often it’s thicker in places where airflow slows down.

Mold is not consistent. It grows in patches. It may be black, green, or white. It is also much more likely to have an odor. You should pay close attention if what you are looking at consists of clusters of spots, rather than a continuous film.

The Odor Test (and Its Limitations)

An earthy or musty smell that intensifies when your HVAC system turns on can indicate a moisture problem somewhere in the system. That odor matters because mold requires moisture to grow. A strong musty odor is a warning you shouldn’t ignore.

That said, the sense of smell is not infallible. Odors can move through the air. What you may think is mold in the ducts may actually be in another part of your house. An inspection is required to identify the source.

Is duct mold dangerous? We can’t make a diagnosis based on a picture of an air vent. But I’d say don’t panic, and don’t ignore it either. Get it inspected.
